The ultimate checklist: 10 things to inspect on a used trailer before buying.

The ultimate checklist: 10 things to inspect on a used trailer before buying.

Buying a used trailer is a financially wise decision, but it comes with some risk if you don’t know where to look. A trailer may look flawless on the surface, but it could be hiding structural or mechanical problems that will quickly turn a good investment into a costly nightmare.

To help you make an informed and safe choice, our experts have compiled the ultimate 10-point checklist. We apply the same level of rigor to every trailer that enters our inventory, because for us, trust is non-negotiable.

The 10-Point Inspection Checklist

1. The Frame and Cross Members: The Spine

This is the starting point. Thoroughly inspect the main frame and cross members. Look for any cracks, especially near welds and suspension mounts. Surface rust is normal, but deep corrosion that is flaking or has created holes is a major red flag that compromises structural integrity.

2. The Kingpin

The kingpin and its pivot are the critical connection point to your truck. The pivot (Kingpin) should show no signs of excessive wear. The metal plate surrounding it should be perfectly flat and free of cracks. A deformed or cracked plate indicates extreme structural stress and can be a serious hazard on the road.

3. Axles and Suspension

Examine the axles for signs of damage, corrosion, or deformation. For the suspension, check the condition of the air cushions (look for cracks or leaks) and the wear on the shock absorbers. Worn suspension components not only affect ride comfort, but also the stability of the trailer and tire wear.

4. Tires and rims

Don’t just check the tread depth. Uneven tire wear is often a symptom of a more serious problem, such as misaligned axles. Inspect the sidewalls for cracks or bubbles, and examine the rims for cracks or deformation, especially around the lug nuts.

5. The braking system

Safety first. Visually inspect the brakes for wear. Check the condition of the air lines and make sure there are no leaks. If possible, connect the trailer to a truck to check that the ABS system is working (the warning light should come on and then go off).

6. The floor

Walk the entire length of the floor inside the trailer. Be on the lookout for any soft or spongy areas, a telltale sign of rot or water damage. Look for holes or damaged boards that could compromise the load capacity and safety of the cargo.

7. Walls and roof

Waterproofing is crucial. Inside, look for signs of water infiltration. The best test is to stand inside, close the doors, and look for daylight coming through any holes or faulty seals, especially in the roof.

8. Rear doors

Open and close the doors several times. They should move smoothly and close tightly. Inspect the hinges, seals, and locking mechanisms. Doors that don’t close properly can not only cause water leaks, but also pose a safety risk.

9. Electrical system and lightingtrique et l’éclairage

Connect the trailer and test all the lights: brakes, turn signals, parking lights. A single burned-out bulb is not a problem, but a faulty electrical system can be a sign of deeper wiring problems that are costly to repair.

10. Refrigeration unit

If you are inspecting a refrigerated trailer, the unit is a major checkpoint. Start the unit, let it run, and check whether it reaches the required temperature quickly and maintains it steadily.

Conclusion: Inspection is your best guarantee

This list is an excellent starting point, but a complete inspection requires a trained eye and experience. Even the smallest detail that is overlooked can have serious consequences.
